• What's New at Iron Range Makerspace

  • Hibbing, MN • June 1, 2019

    Featured maker:

Tim’s Art Plus, www.timsartplus.com 218-269-9197, is running a full-time business out of the Makerspace, creating custom made signs, banners, and graphics. Tim does art, engraving, sculpture, carving, and graphic design and is available at IRM Wed. through Sat. or by appointment Mon. and Tues. With the change in weather, Tim has been installing signs from Hibbing to Tower and recently received a lot of vinyl requests for boat license numbers and commercial vehicles.

    Highlights:

    • IRM began a journey to “build entrepreneurs through opportunities” and started with the St. Louis County Fair; eight makers won 23 ribbons last August and confidence grew.
    • Next, the MacRostie Art Center chose 25 maker-made items valued at $1600 for their Holiday Marketplace, and members grew to believe their products would sell. 30 makers entered pieces in the recent “Little Big Show;” and more sold. Several makers are entering the next juried show or the July 13 Downtown Art Fair.
    • Recently, the MN Discovery Center “CHALLENGE” results came back: 25 makers signed contracts, 366 items are now for sale in the seasonally expanded gift shop; if sales go well, these entrepreneurs would earn $4,000!
    • Along the way, IRM has been coaching entrepreneurs, helping makers to create business cards and write artist biographical statements, often discussing pricing and venues.

    • IRM has developed an 80-person contact list of makers with various talents and is developing more opportunities for entrepreneurs to sell.
    • May was an exceptional month for walk-in requests from local businesses for custom-made products from laser engraving to new construction. IRM refers each request to the member best suited for the opportunity.
